The Northfield news visited the boat again as we made final preparations before moving the boat to its slip in Red Wing. The boat went in the water on Saturday (Jun 4) with the ARTech May term students in attendance. There are a few photos at the end of the slide show, with more to come once we are back in town. A big thanks to all who have helped make this moment possible.

Can you help?

Andrew and Clause are ready to replace the roof portion of the main
cabin and are looking for some extra sets of hands to help them. We
are looking for folks to help rip down (the easy part) and
reconstruct (the fun part). Bring a hammer, tool belt, work gloves,
safety glasses, or whatever you might have - or just show up and we
will provide what you need. It will go quick with many hands.
Because this project is tied into the CRWP organization - your
mileage to and from the work site is tax deductible!

They will be on site and ready for your help at the following dates
and times:

July 9th - 5 PM to dark.
July 10th - 9 AM to 5 PM
July 11th - 9 AM to 3 PM

The boat is temporarily housed at Pigkiss Farm,  4133 Millersburg
Blvd., Lonsdale MN 55046.

Star Tribune reporter Sarah Lemagie and photographer Richard Sennott spent several hours with us in May. The story was published on the front page of the South Metro section on June 2, 2010.

The volunteers are in the process of forming a nonprofit group called Minnesota Youth Waters Project, and they're reaching out to local museums and other groups focused on river ecology and education.

We are a group of students (6th-8th grade) and advisors from Northfield’s ARTech Charter School   We are currently in the process of getting a boat ready to sail the Mississippi River.  On this trip we will start in Lake Pepin and go down the river as far as on one week takes us.  This has been an extraordinary experience for all of us.

Just do it...

The students involved in this project spend each day out at the Hark’s farm learning about riverboats from experts, studying the Mississippi, reading Mark Twain and actually working on repairing the boat.  I don’t know how you measure what is happening here, certainly not with a standardized test of any sort, and yet we still know that the most authentic learning is taking place.
